How to use AI with your PDFs

Tell Docshar what you want in plain words, get a summary of a long PDF, ask questions about it, or change its wording with AI.

Docshar AI is an optional helper built into Docshar. It can do two kinds of jobs. The command bar on the home page and above every tool turns a request like "compress to 1 MB" or "merge and add page numbers" into the right tool steps. The Ask AI panel in the PDF Editor works with the content of your document: it can summarise it, answer questions, find and replace wording, and rewrite selected text.

What is sent to the AI: AI answers come from Google Gemini. What you type or say is sent to Gemini, and for chat, summaries and AI Edit the text of the pages of the open document is sent too. The command bar sends only file names, types, sizes and page counts, not the contents, and passwords you give in a command-bar request (for example “lock with …”) are masked and not sent. Don’t type passwords into the editor chat or AI Edit. Docshar asks for your consent before the first AI request. Avoid using AI with documents that contain sensitive personal information; every tool also works without AI. See the Privacy Policy.

Step by step: let AI run the tools

  1. Type or say what you need. In the command bar on the home page ("Tell Docshar what to do"), type a request such as "compress to 200 KB" or tap the microphone to speak.
  2. Attach your files. Click the paperclip (Attach files) and pick your PDFs or images.
  3. Agree to the AI notice the first time. Read the notice and click I agree, continue. Click Not now if you prefer not to use AI.
  4. Check the plan. Docshar shows the steps it will take, such as "Merge" then "Page Numbers", with the options it chose.
  5. Run it. Click Run. The real Docshar tools process your files in your browser, and you download the result as usual.

Summarise, ask and edit in the PDF Editor

  1. Open your PDF in the PDF Editor and click Ask AI at the top.
  2. In the Chat tab, ask a question such as "Summarise in 5 points", "What are the key dates?" or "What is the total amount?". You can also use your voice.
  3. In the Edit tab, describe a change for the whole document, for example "change the company name to Sharma Traders everywhere". Docshar previews each change before you apply it.
  4. In the Rewrite tab, select a text box on the page, then ask AI to rewrite it, for example more formally, or to translate it.

AI edits are normal edits: you can undo them, and you download the PDF as usual.

Free daily limit

Everyone gets up to 20 free AI requests per day in each browser, and the server also applies a fair-use limit per visitor. The panel shows how many requests are left today. When they run out, the AI features pause until the next day, and every normal tool keeps working.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

Is Docshar AI free?

Yes. You get up to 20 free AI requests per day per browser. The PDF tools have their own free daily allowance, and paid passes give more operations and bigger files; see Pricing.

Does the AI see my PDF file?

The command bar only sees file names, types, sizes and page counts. Chat, summaries and AI edits send the text of your document to Google Gemini, never the PDF file itself.

Do you store my questions or documents?

No. Docshar stores only an AI usage record (feature, model, token counts, time and a salted, pseudonymous hash of your IP address), not your questions, answers or document text. Google processes requests under its own terms.

Can I use Docshar without AI?

Yes. AI is optional. Every tool and the editor work fully without it, and nothing is sent to the AI unless you use an AI feature.
