Make a PDF smaller by entering the file size you want. The tool shrinks photos and scans, removes unused data and packs uncompressed parts, and keeps the text as real text unless you allow otherwise.

How to use Compress PDF

  1. Choose the PDF you want to compress.
  2. Enter a target file size in KB or MB. Half the current size is filled in for you.
  3. Optionally allow turning pages into images if you need a much smaller file.
  4. Click Compress PDF and download the result.

What it does

  • Set a target size in KB or MB. The tool tries gentler settings first and stops at the best quality that fits.
  • Recompresses photos and scanned images as JPEG and scales down very large ones.
  • Removes leftover unused objects and page thumbnails, and packs uncompressed data without loss.
  • Text and vector drawings are kept, so text stays sharp, selectable and searchable by default.
  • Optional setting to turn pages into images when shrinking photos is not enough.
  • If the target cannot be reached, you still get the smallest version it could make and a short explanation of why.

Good to know

  • PDFs that are mostly text and drawings are already stored efficiently and shrink little.
  • Embedded fonts, and scanner image formats such as JPEG 2000, JBIG2 or CMYK images, are not recompressed unless pages are turned into images.
  • Pages turned into images lose their text: it can no longer be selected or searched.

Your files and privacy

Your PDF is compressed inside your browser and is not uploaded to Docshar's server. If you are signed in, Docshar counts your operations (tool, number of files, sizes and page counts), never the file contents. See the Privacy Policy.

Questions

Will my text stay sharp?

Yes, by default. Only images are recompressed. Pages are turned into images only if you turn on that option, and then their text can no longer be selected.

What if my target size cannot be reached?

You get the smallest file the tool could make, along with a note explaining what takes up the space, such as embedded fonts or images that are already well compressed.

What is the smallest size I can choose?

The target must be at least 5 KB and smaller than the current file.

Does compressing reduce image quality?

It can. To reach smaller sizes the tool lowers JPEG quality and resolution step by step, starting with the gentlest settings.
