Split a PDF by File Size

Get multiple smaller documents, each under a maximum file size.

Set a maximum size in MB and the tool splits your PDF into parts that each stay under it. Pages are kept in order and are never cut.

How to use Split PDF by Size

  1. Choose the PDF you want to split.
  2. Enter the maximum size per file in MB.
  3. Click Split by size.
  4. Download each part, or download them all as a ZIP.

What it does

  • Set the size limit per file in MB, including decimals such as 0.5.
  • Measures each page and then checks the real size of every part it builds.
  • Keeps pages in their original order and fills each part with as many pages as fit.
  • Parts are named in order, for example report_part-1.pdf, report_part-2.pdf.
  • Tells you when a part could not be kept under the limit.

Good to know

  • A single page that is larger than the limit on its own gets its own part, which will be bigger than requested.
  • This tool does not compress pages. To make the pages themselves smaller, use Compress PDF.

Your files and privacy

Your PDF is measured and split in your browser and is not uploaded to Docshar's server. If you are signed in, Docshar counts your operations (tool, number of files, sizes and page counts), never the file contents. See the Privacy Policy.

Questions

Why is one part bigger than my limit?

Pages are never cut, so if one page is larger than the limit it is saved as its own part. The result message tells you when this happens.

Will the parts add up to the original size?

Not always. Fonts and images shared by many pages are saved in each part that uses them, so the parts together can be larger than the original.

Does it change the quality?

No. Pages are copied as they are, without recompressing images.
