Lock a PDF so it asks for a password before it opens. You can also choose which actions are allowed, such as printing or copying text.

How to use Protect PDF

  1. Choose a PDF file.
  2. Enter a password and type it again to confirm.
  3. Under Allow people to, tick the actions you want to permit: print, copy text and images, edit pages, or comment and fill forms.
  4. Optionally enter an owner password; if you leave it empty, a random one is used.
  5. Click Protect PDF and download the protected file.

What it does

  • Encrypts the PDF with AES-128 using standard PDF password security, which common PDF readers can open.
  • Requires a password to open the file.
  • Permission settings for printing, copying, editing, and commenting or form filling.
  • Optional owner password for changing permissions later.
  • Encryption runs in your browser using the Web Crypto API.

Good to know

  • Passwords can use only English letters, numbers and common symbols.
  • The password cannot be recovered if you forget it, so keep it safe.
  • Permission settings depend on the PDF reader respecting them; the open password is the main protection. PDFs that are already protected must be unlocked first.

Your files and privacy

Your PDF and password stay in your browser; encryption happens locally and nothing is uploaded to Docshar's server for processing. If you are signed in, Docshar counts your operations (tool, number of files, sizes and page counts), never the file contents. See the Privacy Policy.

Questions

What encryption does this use?

AES-128, using the standard PDF password security that common PDF readers support.

What is the owner password for?

It is a second password that lets someone change the permissions later. If you leave it empty, a random owner password is generated and not shown.

Can Docshar recover my password?

No. The password is not sent to Docshar, so it cannot be recovered. Keep a copy somewhere safe.

Is my password sent anywhere if I use the AI command bar?

Passwords typed in the AI command bar are masked and not sent to the AI service. The password fields in the tool itself stay in your browser.
