Split a PDF by Text on the Page

Start a new document whenever specific text changes from page to page, for example an invoice number or customer name.

Drop your file here

Split a batch of invoices, statements or letters into separate files. A new document starts whenever the value after a label you enter, such as "Invoice No:", changes from one page to the next.

How to use Split PDF by Text

  1. Choose the PDF.
  2. Type the text that comes before the value, for example Invoice No:.
  3. Optionally turn on regular expression mode for more control.
  4. Click Preview matches to see the documents that will be created.
  5. Click Split by text and download the files, one by one or as a ZIP.

What it does

  • Finds the word right after your label on each page and starts a new file when it changes.
  • Pages without a match stay with the previous document.
  • Each file is named after the value found, for example INV-1042.pdf.
  • Preview shows each document's value and page range before you split.
  • Regular expression mode: the first capture group is used as the value.
  • Matching ignores upper and lower case.

Good to know

  • The PDF needs selectable text. Scanned pages without a text layer must be run through OCR first.
  • Without regular expressions, only the first word after the label is used as the value.

Your files and privacy

The text is read and the PDF is split in your browser; the file is not uploaded to Docshar's server. If you are signed in, Docshar counts your operations (tool, number of files, sizes and page counts), never the file contents. See the Privacy Policy.

Questions

What should I type as the label?

Type the text that appears just before the value on each page, such as Invoice No: or Customer:. The word after it becomes the value used to split and name the files.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Only if the PDF has a text layer. Run the OCR tool first to add one to scanned pages.

What if the same value appears twice?

Each run of pages becomes its own file. If a name is repeated, a number is added, for example INV-1042 (2).pdf.
